What is Botox® and how does it work? Botox® is a chemical derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, which when injected into a muscle effectively paralyzes the injected area of the muscle for approximately 3-6 months. Because many of the lines on your face are caused by repeated facial expression, weakening or paralyzing the muscles that cause the skin to fold repeatedly improves deep lines on your face. Botox® may be used along with fillers such as Restylane® to fill in the lines while also paralyzing the muscles that are responsible for them.

What is Botox® used for?  The best use of Botox® is in preventing the formation of typical crow's feet lines, frown lines or as a preventive against forehead lines in patients from young adult on. The lines that are just beginning to form and those that have not formed yet are the ones best treated in a preventive manner. However, deep lines may also be softened significantly by paralyzing the responsible muscles.

Botox® injections are performed without anesthesia. The areas of the muscle to be injected are marked and a very small amount is injected into each location in the muscle. You’ll be asked not to rub or massage the injected area for 24 hours to prevent the Botox® from spreading to surrounding muscles that you do not want affected.

What should I expect during and after the injection?  You will experience mild discomfort with each injection, but it is very tolerable. After the injection, you will notice a little bit of redness at the injection site but this goes away after about 2 hours. The effect of Botox® will not be evident until 5-7 days after the injection. By the next morning, you’ll see no signs of intervention, but mild bruising is possible in the corners of the eyes.

If you wish, you may also have a filler injected into deep lines by procedures using Radiesse® Restylane® or Sculptra®.
